Home Button App for iPhones, iPads and iPods

Home button app? What's the need?

So, is there a home button app for Apple iPhones, iPads and iPods out there? This question seems to be coming up a lot now, and with millions of Apple devices, there's a definite need when the home button goes kaput. See the interest since Jan 2009 on Google trends; it's peaked now:

What's a home button app anyway?

Coming back to the question, is there a home button app or what's a home button app anyway?
Well, if you are talking about an app in the installable sense, there's none in the Apple App Store yet. And it's highly unlikely that there ever will be one listed out there but that's no reason to despair. Apple does provide the AssistiveTouch option in the iOS 5+ motor skills features, which mostly works as an app would. No surprise then that people like to call it the home button app:

iOS AssistiveTouch and how to activate it

AssistiveTouch needs to be activated in your iPhone, iPad or iPod's iOS settings. Once activated, it places a "soft" on-screen home button that can perform most of the functions that the "hard" or "real" home button does. Yes, you can even take a screenshot using Assistive Touch. Here's how to activate this on-screen "home button app thingy".

AssistiveTouch works on iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 6, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 S, iPhone 6 S Plus, iPhone 7,  iPhone SE, and iPad 1, 2, 3, 4, iPad Air and iPad Mini all versions. AssistiveTouch is available in the latest iOS 10 Version as well.

Home button apps for jailbroken iPhones?

Now that sums up the App Store world but what about jailbroken devices? Yes, there are a couple of home button app alternatives for jailbroken iPhones that can be installed using Cidia,  like Activator and Zephyr but if you are considering a jailbreak just to install a home button app on your Apple device, we highly recommend that you read this before you go ahead so that you are well armed with the right information before you make that decision.
